THE HIDDEN GODS.
The gods of the underworld.
Act i - Scene i - Xilam and the
gods.
A child has been born and his mother has died.
His father is lying on the floor next to the corpse
contemplating it, screaming over her cold
immobile body. He is asking her to come back to
life:
Izal:
My love, why have you gone and left me alone suffering so much pain? I want to go with you as
well. I can’t live with the memory that you are not here any more. I feel I am going mad. No!...
come back to me please!! I beg you, please!!
The child start crying and Izal moves towards him, takes him on his arms and says,
Are you crying as well my little babe? Are you needing the warmness of your mother? Come and
look your mother, she’s dead; she’s gone, she doesn't have a memory of your existe. Anyway......
she would like to be with you but...(he lies over her and starts whispering) ...she is gone to
Xibalba.
Suddenly, the Maya priest Xilam is making an
appearance from the north west of the place.
Following him are three musicians and three
dancers as well.... they make appearance to the
scene. This is a very important point when a
maya ceremony is going to be held. This is a
ceremony for the birth of a maya lord in modern
times. Xilam is playing a flute. The other
musicians and dancers are wearing Maya
costumes. The priest has a jaguar skin on his
back which gives him the distinction of a jaguar
priest. When they are in scene, there is a sudden
silence. And the drum starts playing following
the cascada and the zampona. Xilam says to Izal:
Xilam:
Izal, Comeover here and leave her alone== and bring your son over here; she just has gone to
Xibalba and nothing you can do about it, but she will be back because always has been a good
woman. -Then he starts talking to the child and says- you, son of the gods, have fought against
the gods of the underground and have been victorious; Itzamna, the god of the heavens is
protecting you from now onwards and nobody might touch you........there is party in Xibalba
because now we have someone who will restore the Maya knowledge.....the knowledge of the
land, the knowledge of the Tzolchin our sacred calendar. In short time there will be a lot of work
but we will get recognition of our sacred rights and our sacred culture is going to be helpful to give
back to the land what it deserves. Chac, the rain god; Yum Kaax, the god of corn and, Itchel the
Moon goddess, are making appearance and there will be a lot of raining and good crops.
However, the enemies of the land and the wildlife will make appearance as well, to destroy the
land, destroy the wildlife and to kill the defenders of the land and anybody who wants to defend
the rights of the people of
the land. Great boy, you are born with the spirit of Quetzalcoat, the feathered snake, in these
lands, the ancestral paradise of Atlacatl, Lempira, Nicarao, Zapata, Farabundo and Sandino.
With you, power from the underground is coming. The gods of Xibalba are coming back. They
are coming back from Tikal, from Tazumal, from Izalco and Arcatao, from San Cristobal and
Esteli, from Chinandega and from Yucatan. Oh Quetzalcoat, sacred feathered snake, your
dreamtime has finished already, come out from the underground and fly again and choose a name
for this boy who has been given power from Xibalba......
This is acted out by the dancers and singers .
Some music is being played. When Xilam finishes
speaking, the masked gods are lying in the floor
like death corpses. Therefore, they start taking
life again and the music is being played once
again. Suddenly a woman wearing feathers and
dancing like a snake, make appearance to the
scene and approach the boy and says to him:
Quetzalcoat:
Power from Xibalba has been given to you, and no one might touch you if the gods are caring for you.
You will have to travel throughout the nine layers of the underground........You will bring to the land the
power of the moon, the sun, the stars, the rain, the plumed serpent,.. You will teach .the people how to
care about the land ...... you have been chosen by the gods and your name is Xibal...
Many voices are heard Xibal! Xibal! Xibal!
The music was being played by the musicians and
the dancers were dancing a very meaningful
dance. Xilam talk to the people met there and
says, -Today is a party day, the son of our
ancient gods is born and we have to celebrate it,
let's have some pulque and chicha of pineapple
and corn to be heard by the gods, let's dance!
The party has finished and everybody is leaving.
Xilam, the masked dancers and the musicians are
leaving for Xibalba, the dwelling of the hidden
gods, the gods of the underground. Xibal talks to
Izal his final words.
Xilam: -we are leaving for Xibalba
, the dwelling of the hidden gods.
we are going to liberate some
people from there, let them to be
free from oppression, free from
alienation, free from the sight of
the killing machine, free from the
steps o the big boot coming from
north, going through Central
America to South America but
leaving destruction and
uncertainty everywhere they want
to. We want to let them know
that they are owners of their own
fate and no one else has the right
to play with it.
Izal, don’t worry about your wife,
she was told that she shouldn't
have a baby but she decided to
give up her life and give it to your
son. The time is changing like
everything change. A long time
ago, here used to be unity, people
used to work together
understanding each other,
fulfilling their own needs and the
needs of others. But no things
have changed and everything is
different. Since the coming of the
invaders we haven’t been left in
peace. Now the military forces are
in all towns of the Maya Land.
We haven’t invited them to come,
but they have come; not as
friends but as our enemies
because they have come to
profane our sacred places, to kill
our people and protect
mercenaries coming to dig our
underground and steal our
natural wealth. Take care from
them because they want to take
you with them.
Specially take care of the child
because they are barbarians and
don’t respect even children,
because they know the children
are the future. If I cannot see you
again, I would like to see the
child alive before I die.
Xibal and the dancers have gone
for an entrance at the end of the
scenery. The entrance is like a
door of a Maya Temple (Tikal,
the temple of the great jaguar.
